Distant Fellowship: William Morris and South Asia

Exploring and problematising William Morris’s connections with South Asia, this exhibition featured new work by Priya Sundram and Nia Thandapani of Studio Carrom. Sundram and Thandapani designed a new pattern based on Morris’s designs, made by traditional block printers in India and used to create a domestic-style space within the Gallery, where visitors could explore alternative resources around Morris and South Asia in various community languages.

The exhibition included a publication collating Sundram and Thandapani's research and an alternative guide to the Gallery, written by artists and members of the local community. There were also interventions throughout the permanent galleries by artists with links to South Asia including:

Vasundhara Sellamuthu
Shahed Saleem
Shehzil Malik
Studio Carrom
Kangan Arora
Rathna Ramanathan
Sofia Niazi and Aleesha Nandhra
Tiipoi

The exhibition was held at the William Morris Gallery from May to September 2021.
